WAN

The Wide Area Network (WAN) is an IP network that provides access to the internet. It is used to forward traffic to and from an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

By default, the WAN interface is set as a DHCP client and uses an untagged VLAN by default.

WAN Dashboard

The WAN Dashboard provides default chart-based visualizations of key metrics over the past 24 hours for up to two Secure Gateway WAN connections.

A toggle button is available at the top-right corner of the WAN Networks page to switch between two viewing modes:

  • Dashboard View—Displays chart-based visualizations of WAN metrics over a rolling 24-hour period. This view is enabled by default.
  • List View—Displays the tabular WAN status and configuration.

Dashboard Charts

HPE Networking Instant On supports three metric charts in the Dashboard View.

Health & Availability

The Health and Availability chart displays the WAN health state and online or offline availability over time using horizontal status bars.

Description

Good

The WAN health score is good. The connection is performing within expected parameters.

Fair

The WAN health score is sub-optimal. The connection may be experiencing degraded performance.

Poor

The WAN health score is poor. The connection is experiencing significant issues.

None

The WAN connection is in unknown state.

Description

Online

The WAN connection is online and operational.

Offline

The WAN connection is offline.

Hover the cursor over the Health And Availability chart, the following information is displayed at the selected point in time:

  • WAN Connection Name—Displays the name of the connection.
  • Health state—Displays the health of the connection is good, fair, or poor.
  • Connection state—Displays the connection is online or offline.
  • Timestamp—Displays the time stamp of the selected data point.

Usage

The Usage chart displays upstream (upload) and downstream (download) traffic volume per WAN connection as a line chart.

  • Single WAN—For a single WAN site, the chart displays uploads above zero and downloads below using an inverted scale to clearly separate them.
  • Multi WAN—For a multi WAN site, the chart displays upload and download data per connection with distinct line colors, and a stacked layout to differentiate traffic.

Hover the cursor over the Usage chart, the following information is displayed at the selected point in time:

  • WAN Connection Name—Displays the name of the WAN connection.
  • Download Value—Displays the download traffic volume at the selected point in time.
  • Upload Value—Displays the upload traffic volume at the selected point in time.
  • Timestamp—Displays the time stamp of the selected data point.

For multi WAN sites, the tool tip displays the health and availability state for each WAN connection.

Latency

Latency is the time it takes for a data packet to travel from a source to a destination across the network, and is typically measured in milliseconds (ms). It reflects the responsiveness of a connection: lower latency results in a faster, more responsive network, while higher latency introduces delays that can degrade the quality of real-time applications such as voice and video calls, video conferencing, and online gaming. Latency can be affected by the distance to destination, network congestion, and the quality of the WAN connection provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

The Latency chart displays the network latency, measured in milliseconds (ms), per WAN connection as a line chart.

  • Single WAN—For a single WAN site, the chart displays the latency values for the WAN connection over the past 24 hours.
  • Multi WAN—For a multi WAN site, the chart displays the latency data per connection with distinct line colors to differentiate the connections.

Hover the cursor over the Latency chart, the following information is displayed at the selected point in time:

  • WAN Connection Name—Displays the name of the WAN connection.
  • Latency—Displays the latency, in milliseconds, at the selected point in time.
  • Timestamp—Displays the time stamp of the selected data point.

For multi WAN sites, the tool tip displays the latency value for each WAN connection.

Packet Loss

Packet loss occurs when one or more data packets traveling across the network fail to reach their destination. It is expressed as the percentage of packets lost out of the total number of packets sent. Packet loss is commonly caused by network congestion, unreliable or overloaded links, and faulty hardware or cabling. Even a small percentage of packet loss can noticeably degrade performance, resulting in choppy audio, frozen or pixelated video, and slower or interrupted data transfers, which is why it is an important indicator of WAN connection quality.

The Packet Loss chart displays the percentage of packets lost per WAN connection as a line chart.

  • Single WAN—For a single WAN site, the chart displays the packet loss percentage for the WAN connection over the past 24 hours.
  • Multi WAN—For a multi WAN site, the chart displays the packet loss data per connection with distinct line colors to differentiate the connections.

Hover the cursor over the Packet Loss chart, the following information is displayed at the selected point in time:

  • WAN Connection Name—Displays the name of the WAN connection.
  • Packet Loss—Displays the packet loss percentage at the selected point in time.
  • Timestamp—Displays the time stamp of the selected data point.

For multi WAN sites, the tool tip displays the packet loss value for each WAN connection.

WAN Connections

HPE Networking Instant On supports two WAN connections in a site.

Primary WAN Connection

The primary WAN connection is created during the initial setup and its priority is automatically assigned as Primary. The primary WAN is assigned to WAN physical port of secure gateway and cannot be assigned to any other port. It supports DHCP, static IP, and PPPoE configurations along with DNS and VLAN settings.

Secondary WAN Connection

The secondary connection can be designated as the secondary WAN. It provides backup and failover capabilities in the event when primary connection is not available. The priority for the secondary WAN is assigned as Secondary.

WAN Details

To view the WAN details, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the WAN () tile on the Instant On mobile app home page.
  2. Tap any of the WAN connections in the WAN tab. This tab appears only when a secure gateway is deployed at a site.

Description

Name

Displays the name of the WAN. By default, the name of primary WAN connection is displayed as Internet.

Health

Displays the health status of the network:

  • Good — Indicates that the overall health score of the network is good.
  • Fair — Indicates that the overall health score of the network is sub-optimal.
  • Poor — Indicates that the overall health score of the network is poor.
  • None — Indicates that the network is in unknown state.

Status

Shows the status of the network, whether Online or Offline.

Connection

Priority

Indicates the primary or secondary role of the WAN connection.

Connection Type

Indicates the connection type. The supported connection type is Ethernet.

Speed/Duplex

Displays the speed of the port and indicates whether the client is connected in a full duplex or half duplex mode.

Uplink

Uplink VLAN

Specifies the VLAN ID associated with the network.

IP Assignment

Specifies how the IP address is assigned to the WAN connection. Tap on IP assignment to change the settings.

Network Assignment

Specifies the IP address assigned to the WAN connection
